One of the projects we’ve been selectively refining for years is our Black & White VPI Snow project.
Producing VPI Snows is one thing. Producing the type of VPI Snow we personally want to see is another.
We’ve been selecting toward really clean black-and-white animals with strong contrast and as little unwanted coloration as possible. The male pictured here is a good example of what we’re trying to achieve.
This season, we were really looking forward to seeing the next step.
He was paired to ourB&W VPI Snow Aztec female, and after months of watching and waiting, everything seemed to be heading in the right direction.
Unfortunately, things don’t always go as planned.
Last weekend, she dropped slugs.
No babies this time.
Of course it’s disappointing, especially when you’ve spent years building toward a project and then months waiting to see the result.
But that’s breeding.
You can carefully select the animals. You can plan the genetics. You can do everything you can to give them the right conditions.
But ultimately, the boas decide.
So we’ll regroup, make our plans, and hopefully get another opportunity to take the Black & White VPI Snow project one step further next season.
That’s part of the journey too.
